ProfilesLauri SalamySponsoring Organization: Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES School Library System Teaching Math 8/9 at Saranac Lake Middle School, Saranac Lake, New York Also mother of beautiful Vanessa 11 and loving Nicholas 9, and married for 15 wonderful years to David. Attending Texas Woman’s University - 100% online master degree. I have completed 5 of the 12 courses and am currently enrolled in 4 more summer courses. In all honesty I find the distance courses to be 3 times as much work/time. However due to my geographic location it is my only option and being able to work on a flexible schedule is useful. I love to learn from classmates all through out the country and using technology to learn has altered my teaching style. NY Certification has changed since my 1990 degree so I am also forced to take an additional course on Inclusion this summer. In my spare time I used to read voraciously, garden, ski, go boating, take long walks, and go to auctions. Hopefully I will be able to return to those pastimes next summer after my student teaching. Update - Spring 2008: While still working as a math educator, I am helping the English Department pick a book for each of the 6-8 grades for a total school read project. I have made recommendations to all of the Elementary, Middle and High Schools in my District. I have encouraged and shared knowledge with my students in their research endeavors and leisure reading choices. I have passed along information gained from ALA and NYLA electronic postings and print material to content specific teachers. I post information in the teachers' lounge and leave my professional magazines once I have finished with them. I think that my experience completing an online Master's program showcases my talent for multi-tasking, quest for knowledge, ability to use technology, and 110% work ethic. I feel refreshed and energized. |
