Applying for Jobs, Resumes & Cover Letters

Your resume gets you in the door for an interview! Spend time crafting a cover letter and resume that will work for you. If need be, customize your presentation for each job application, emphasizing the experience you've had that qualifies you for that particular job.

Cover letters are also very important. Take the time to read the job description carefully. Explain how your skills match the employers needs. If you don't have much (or any) professional experience yet, think of skills that you have which pertain to those in a position you might seek. Customer service, organizational skills, research experience, teaching, working with children, literacy initiative working as a volunteer, and personal interests can be translated into valuable skills an employer will appreciate.

And don't forget to check your spelling and grammar! Have a friend or two proofread your resume and cover letters.
